Iloilo City is chasing the MICE or Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions, Exhibitions or Events market.
This was the assessment of Department of Tourism (DOT) Assistant Secretary Art Boncato referring to the forthcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in the metropolis.
“Iloilo City is poised to become a major player in the Philippine MICE industry and its hosting of several APEC meetings in July, September, and October will be a fitting initiation. To support its bid to become a MICE destination is the opening of the Iloilo Convention Center (ICC) located at Megaworld's Iloilo Business Park,” stressed Boncato.
Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog welcomed the development saying the city has become a favorite venue of big gatherings including conventions and sports events as well as study tours of various organizations.
He added that the iconic and state-of-the-art ICC which can accommodate 3,700 seats will boost the city’s claim as convention destination attracting more visitors and tourists as well as investors.
DOT Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. inspected ICC last June 12 and got updated on the construction's terminal timetable.
The city will be hosting four APEC meetings including Infrastructure Development Financing with Strengthening Capital Markets on Jul 23-24; SME Ministerial Meeting on Sept. 21-25; Senior Disaster Management Officials Forum on Sept. 22-23; and Food Security Week with Blue Economy on Sept. 28-Oct. 6.
Another global event the Urban Environmental Accord (UEA) Summit is slated on Sept.15-17.
