Iloilo City - Western Visayas

What can I say about my #BecomingFilipino Iloilo City journey...The city is full of beautiful historic buildings, the river is beautiful, the people are warm and friendly, the food is...GRABE! The food is amazing! Batchoy, Lumpia, Pancit Molo, "Butong-Butong", Hand-made coffee! So much food and drink! Oh did I mention that the jeepneys are hilariously fun! They remind me of "lowrider" vehicles from "rap music videos". I need not say more...This is my Iloilo experience, all caught on video! One day at a time, One "Namit Gid" at a time... #BecomingFilipinoSuper Apir! *** The "Old Cathedral" I should have called "The Belfry"

The TAYO Awardee for the Day is the University of San Agustin Little Theater from Iloilo City, Iloilo. Their winning project is called Imagine|A|Nation. “Project Imagine-A-Nation” is the response of University of San Agustin Little Theatre (USALT) to the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda. It is a series of creative works that reflect the stories of those that had to endure suffering and loss brought about by the storm, aiming to reach out and reassure them that they will get through what seems to be the insurmountable challenge of continuing and rebuilding their lives. The series is comprised of productions such as Voices After the Storm, Basura Busters and IMAGINE-A-NATION – works that utilized different approaches in delivering stories of strength and hope in the face of adversity. Voices After the Storm is a collection of short monologues culled from news reports, social media posts and personal accounts. Volunteers from the University of San Agustin visited the Municipality of Lemery in Northern IloIlo, which was hit by the storm. They provided relief goods and medical assistance, and the members of Little Theatre thought of putting on a show for the kids. They performed “Basura Busters”, - a story of three kids turned heroes to save their bewitched parents from Buyong Basura with help from kids of the local community. Aside from the comic relief that the play afforded the children, it encouraged the young audience to do their part in rebuilding their communities. It was received very well. Your organization's project could be featured in this page! Learn more about the TAYO Awards on www.tayoawards.net! The Deadline for the submission of project entries is on September 4, 2015.

Milo Little Olympics Visayas leg will be on Sept. 11 to 13 in Iloilo City.
The regional multi-event meet was held in Cebu for 19 years. It was transferred to Iloilo City this year.
“The local government units of Iloilo are very supportive of the event, including the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6 and Iloilo division,” according to organizer Ricky Ballesteros.
“In fact, they are very excited that finally, they’re going to host the Milo Little Olympics.”
“Our first meeting had positive responses. We also met with the tournament directors. The games will be on Sept. 11 to 13 and what we are pushing now is to put the opening ceremony on Sept. 10,” said Ballesteros, who was joined by Dr. Danilo Villadolid and Iloilo City sports director Jojo Castro.
Iloilo has a lot of schools for the delegations to stay for the course of the tournament.
In fact, the Iloilo will be fielding at least 300 competing schools.

Before coming to the Philippines, I never once thought about ancestral homes. I never associated this country with beautiful buildings... Turns out you don't even need to like beaches, scuba diving, mountains, rivers, or lakes (although I love nature and all of those). IloIlo has once again reminded me... This country is just full of history, and full of incredibly beautiful buildings! Seriously I just love roaming around IloIlo! The houses, and architecture here...just amazing! You can just roam around eating and looking at buildings... You will never get bored! I was scootering around Jaro area (by the cathedral) when all of a sudden I saw this majestic old house. I literally thought it must be a museum or historical site... Nope this kid playing badminton walked up to me and joined me for a "pogi face" photo. People actually lived in the house! Look at it!! Even modern businesses are housed in incredibly historic looking buildings in this city! IloIlo... Ayus!! Historically awesome! One day at a time, One "historical pogi face" at a time... #BecomingFilipino Super Apir!

PDEA CITES MABILOG FOR ANTI-DRUG FIGHT

Iloilo City was cited as the only metropolis to have all villages with functional anti-drug abuse councils by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog stressed the recognition is a manifestation of successful campaign against illegal drugs supported by stakeholders to safeguard the public health and safety.
Mabilog got a plaque of recognition for the advocacy, contribution and support to unified campaign against illegal drugs from PDEA Director Gen. Arturo Cacdac, Jr. during PDEA-6 13th Anniversary Celebration June 18.
"As chairman of the Iloilo City Anti-Drug Abuse Council, he has caused the creation of the 180 functional Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils, the only city to achieve 100 percent,” stated PDEA.
Mabilog created the Task Force on Anti-Drug Abuse and Education in conducting symposiums in schools and barangays for the Ilonggos particularly the youth to become aware of ill effects of illegal drugs and protect them.
"We don’t want a single Ilonggo life to be wasted on illegal drugs. We acknowledge however that illegal drug is a problem that is why the city government is all out in its support to PDEA,” said Mabilog.
The mayor is very supportive of the Iloilo City Police Office’s barangay drug clearing operations by providing motorcycles, vehicles and equipment to enhance police mobility and capabilities of law enforcers.
Mabilog encourage the cooperation of everyone in pursuing a drug-free city.

ILOILO CITY VILLAGES INSTALL CCTVs

Iloilo City villages have started installing Closed-circuit Camera Televisions (CCTVs) in strategic locations as a preventive security measure and for easier tracking of evidence whenever crimes are committed.
Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog welcomed the development saying the support of barangays in establishing safer communities is very commendable.
Some 40 out of the 180 barangays in city already set up their CCTVs which are considered deterrent against crimes and a reliable source of information in solving criminalities.
Barangays are also encouraged to enhance their patrols and tanods for faster response to emergencies and serve as force multiplier in dealing with incidents.
Mabilog also sought stakeholders’ support in making the city safe for residents and visitors.

Mayor J. Mabilog. Ako isa ka tumandok sang Iloilo. Lived in Tagbak Jaro. Presently living in London.
I have seen lots of video about Iloilo in the facebook. Before I thought Iloiilo will remain stagnant like a still water. I have seen soo much progress in the city. While maintaining the traditional heritage of the city.
You are a great leader and a great Mayor. Thank you for making Iloilo city beautiful, progressive and a great city where you can live with a smile. Very well done Mayor.

Ps: even though I havent seen it. Love the bike lane.

ILOILO CITY MAJOR MICE PLAYER

Iloilo City is chasing the MICE or Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions, Exhibitions or Events market.
This was the assessment of Department of Tourism (DOT) Assistant Secretary Art Boncato referring to the forthcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in the metropolis.
“Iloilo City is poised to become a major player in the Philippine MICE industry and its hosting of several APEC meetings in July, September, and October will be a fitting initiation. To support its bid to become a MICE destination is the opening of the Iloilo Convention Center (ICC) located at Megaworld's Iloilo Business Park,” stressed Boncato.
Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog welcomed the development saying the city has become a favorite venue of big gatherings including conventions and sports events as well as study tours of various organizations.
He added that the iconic and state-of-the-art ICC which can accommodate 3,700 seats will boost the city’s claim as convention destination attracting more visitors and tourists as well as investors.
DOT Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. inspected ICC last June 12 and got updated on the construction's terminal timetable.
The city will be hosting four APEC meetings including Infrastructure Development Financing with Strengthening Capital Markets on Jul 23-24; SME Ministerial Meeting on Sept. 21-25; Senior Disaster Management Officials Forum on Sept. 22-23; and Food Security Week with Blue Economy on Sept. 28-Oct. 6.
Another global event the Urban Environmental Accord (UEA) Summit is slated on Sept.15-17.

78 year old hand brewed local coffee... La Paz Market in IloIlo is home to delicious batchoy! But! It is also home to something else! Kape pa More!! I heard rumors of a local place called "Madge Cafe", that can be found hidden within La Paz Market. What a Super Ayus place to wake up! The coffee is incredible! The ambience is local and... Smiles aren't hard to find! It is really a "local morning tambay spot." They even have personal mugs for locals who have been coming for years! There was a group of gentlemen sitting next to me who had mugs with their names painted on them.
